Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I can't log in anymore. The field is not long enough.
A: You need to login using your UTORid, not your email address. To find out what your UTORid is, go to http://www.utorid.utoronto.ca and click on "get information". Fill in your email address and password. Your UTORid and other important information will be presented.
Q: What size attachment can I send in webmail?
A: Webmail attachments can be up to 10 MB in size. This was raised on May 9, 2007 from 2 MB.
Q: Is there a size limit for attachments when using an email client package with UTORmail?
A:
UTORmail supports attachments up to 50 MB in size for sending or receiving email.
NOTE: There is a quota limit of 120 MB for UTORmail which will cause new email messages to not be delivered until usage is below the limit.
Please review our UTORquota site at http://www.utoronto.ca/cleanup/
Q: Why can't I log in directly to webmail?
A: We have designed the system as a portal: a site which gathers information and services for you. One of those services is webmail.
Q: How do I change the order of the messages?
A: Click the little triangle next to the blue highlighted column header (the default is '#', i.e. the number of the message).
Q: I am getting junk, pornographic, and/or commercial messages I did not request or want.
A: Please review our SPAM FAQ at http://www.utoronto.ca/ns/utormail/spam.html
Q: My addressbook has disappeared.
A: When you click on Addressbook, you are presented with the Search page. You can click on the Search button at the bottom of the page to get a listing of your Addressbook. Alternatively, you can click on "Browse" in the top-left corner.
Q: How do I make "Expand Names" expand aliases?
A: The default is to expand on the "Name" and the "Email" fields. To get "Expand Names" to expand on the "Alias" field, go to "Options" in webmail (not in Addressbooks), click on "Addressbooks", then select "My Addressbook" and in the second list, make sure "Aliases" is selected.
Q: Attachments don't work. - OR - Clicking on "Attachments" doesn't do anything.
A: The "Attachments" button is supposed to scroll you down to the bottom of the compose page, but sometimes it doesn't do that. You may have to resize the window to get the browser to show the scroll bar and to let you move to the bottom of the page. At the bottom is the Attachments section. Fill in the field with the filename, or use the Browse button to find the file you want, then click "Attach" to actually attach the file. You should see a list of attachments. The checkbox in this list is meant for you to remove attachments.
Q: I can't send attachments.
A: Some people have complained that they can't send email with normal text and an attachment. Instead of closing, the compose window refreshes, there is no error message, and the email is not sent, and no copy is put into the sent-mail folder. A work-around is to click the checkbox next to the attachment. Then, sending will work.
Q: I am using Sympatico with a Linksys router, and webmail send fails.
A: Some people using Sympatico with a Linksys BEFSR11 or similiar router have reported problems sending or uploading files to a variety of Internet services unless the router's "MTU" setting" is changed from the default "disabled" to "1492".
Q: why doesn't webmail display HTML correctly?
A: We have turned off displaying HTML directly for security reasons.
